For those of you who have not heard, COPD, which means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is on the rise. COPD happens to be one of the top causes of death in the United States of America. COPD damages the lungs and makes it very difficult to breath. Individuals with this disease are often easily exerted.
COPD can be caused by a number of factors. The leading contributor to this deadly disease is smoking. Environmental air pollution, second hand smoke, and hereditary factors can also contribute to the development of this disease.
I know first handedly how hurtful and progressive the disease is. My father passed away in 2006 after fighting COPD for seven years. His health slowly diminished because of this disease. He died at the young age of 46.
The best way to reduce your chances of acquiring COPD are to not smoke and avoid breathing in second hand smoke. If you already have COPD, you should quit smoking immediately, avoid colds and respiratory infections by getting annual check ups and vaccinations, and avoid breathing in harsh or hazardous substances.
