What are the advantages to having reserves?

One of the main advantages to having reserves is that they increase the manpower available many times over and are ready to serve in a relatively short period of time, as they are already trained. Sometimes reservists are combat veterans; and since they have already done the job, the quality of our forces is increased. A large reservist pool allows the government to avoid the cost of training new recruits. Also, most people in the reserves have a ‘regular’ job that they do; so if they are called up it will also affect the economy. In that respect, the government will only call them up if it is unavoidable. The Army Reserve can be deployed in many situations. In peacetime, they are available to help with internal security and disaster relief.
