Broadband Illegal File Sharing

Around the world, computer users are rampantly sharing files of all types – most of which are illegal. In this statistic, the UK is absolutely no exception. Recent legislations in the UK have cracked down of file sharing users, creating penalties for their illicit actions. These users, most of which are broadband subscribers, are often unaware of the penalizations which can be put forth upon them for being involved in such illegal activity. This issue has grown to be quite prominent, to the point that many broadband providers have decided to put their foot down. As much of the pressure from the government is merely placed upon prominent providers, quite a bit of companies have decided to “look the other way”, meriting their users illegal activity in trade for their subscription.

According to Telegraph, Virgin media will begin to dispatch warning letters to subscribers. Those who have been found sharing copyrighted material, or whose accounts contain substantial suspicious activity will receive such a warning letter. This action is in full conjunction with the British Phonographic Industry’s illegal downloading campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of illegal peer-to-peer activity thought the nation. The letters serve to inform users of the wrongdoings, especially parents who aren’t aware of their children’s online activity.
